Susu Mama is a weekly event for mothers and their childrenMany women with young children feel socially isolated and disempowered and this can particularly be an issue when the person is from a different cultural background. SusuMama is a weekly event for mothers and their children to get together and exchange information by sharing their experiences of living in Australia. It includes social activities as well as cooking and eating. Guest speakers are invited to provide a variety of information sessions to participants. SusuMama aims to facilitate the integration and acceptance of women into the Australian multicultural community covering a spectrum of issues from legal, mother and child, health and mainstream services.

All mothers with young children are invited to join in on the weekly get-together of eating, exchanging stories and supporting each other. Dedicated group sessions on a variety of issues also occur on a regular basis. This program is non-religious/non-denominational. All are welcome. A variety of ethnic cultures attend and enjoy the participation of the SusuMama group.

Last year SusuMama enrolled in a Water Safety Awareness course for parents and children run by the Royal life Saving Society of Australia.  It is a aimed at providing water safety skills and knowledge, including the ability to react quickly in an emergency situation (where early intervention saves lives).  The program consists of five free sessions which both the parent/guardian and the child attend. These sessions provide instruction in emergency care, resuscitation skills and water awareness utilising both in and out of water activities.  The course will be continuing in 2012.

SusuMama is funded by Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FAHCSIA).
