The Commonwealth Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) fund the SGP program to deliver services which assist eligible clients to become self-reliant and participate as equals in Australian society.

The main purpose of the program and MCSCA is funded for are:
  • Orientation to Australia, to assist arrivals to become more self-reliant and able to participate in Australian society
      1. Casework
      2. Referrals
      3. Group information sessions
  • Developing communities, assisting newly arrived migrant and humanitarian communities to identify main goals and interests, develop a shared purpose and promote a sense of identity and belonging

The program provides support and services for migrants and their families in their first five years after their arrival in Australia.

The program is focused on providing services to permanent residents which can be:
  • Humanitarian refugeesFamily stream migrants with low English language skills
  • Dependents of skilled migrants in regional areas with low English skills
  • Temporary residents e.g. spouses in regional areas
  • Migrant communities which are getting significant numbers of new arrivals and who need assistance to develop
